Introduction

Vedic Astrology, also called Jyotish in Hindi, is the oldest system of astrology in the world.  It’s derived from the Sanskrit word “jyoti” which means light.  As the pure light of scientific knowledge, the word Jyotish implies studying a person’s  character,  health, events, future and more.  Indian ancient saints through their yoga science saw the universe and the solar system inside their minds.  Based on this works, Vedic astrology is formed on the basis of effects of planets and constellations and the influence of them in a person’s life.  Astrology has two main parts: Mathematics (Astronomy) and Prediction (Astrology).  Mathematics is the part of astrology that is solely based on calculation and formulae; mathematic is mainly used for making horoscope, almanac, calculating position of planets, their movements, eclipses, etc.  Predictions are calculations based on effects of planets and forecast based on these effects over a human being.

Astrology is called as the eyes of the Vedas.  Eye is related to seeing.  Thus astrology is aimed to see the events that happen in a human life which could be past, present or future.  On individual basis, astrology helps in knowing various events that may happen in a person’s life since the moment of their birth.  Jyotish helps to forecast auspicious and inauspicious situations for any area of the human life.

Western Astrology Vs Vedic Astrology

Astronomical Differences:

The basic difference between the two systems is that the Vedic zodiac is Sidereal and the Western is Tropical. In Sidereal astrology, the zodiac is aligned with 27 constellations, or fixed star groups. Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, aligns with the first constellation, called Aswini. In the tropical zodiac, the point in space when the Sun crosses the earth’s equator is the beginning point of the zodiac, or Aries.

Interpretive Differences:

If you are familiar with astrology, the first thing you will notice is that Western chart is round shape and the Vedic chart is square. Western astrology emphasizes the psychological nature of the individual, but lacks reliability for predicting future cycles and events.  Although Vedic astrology also defines a person’s psychological nature, it gives more focus to understanding when certain events are likely to take place.  Vedic astrology gives a better view of a person’s karmic tendencies, and when such tendencies are likely to manifest for that person.  The times of life events are shown through a detailed system of planetary time cycles, called “dashas.”  There is no corresponding method in Western astrology.  Vedic astrology has a greater scope, depth and accuracy for predicting the future.

Note: You may notice that Vedic chart will appear to have planets aligned with the wrong constellations (signs).  A natal chart [or a birth chart] reading reveals the differing sign and house changes of planets in the Vedic chart; for example, suppose your Western astrology sun sign is in Capricorn, in the Vedic system, it could be in Sagittarius.  Your rising sign and the other planets might also be in unfamiliar signs.  However, this does not mean that Vedic astrology is inaccurate.  It simply calculates a horoscope differently.  The interpretations are most often more precise than in Western astrology.

Is this program for you?

Indian seers and saints have made various scientific principles that were helpful for the progress of an individual and society as a whole.  The sole aim of these principles was for human welfare.  Astrology is said to be the eyes of the vedas and is used for performing any auspicious deed like marriage, housing, business, movement, partnership, etc.  Problems and obstacles are caused by deeds that human perform in this or another lifetime.  Good and not that good situations arise by the deeds that an individual has done and those situations can be seen with the study of a Vedic astrology chart.  With the help of astrology, one can reveal incidents in the past and the future that is ahead; with these information the individual can take actions toward what is the best course of action to him/her and also, Vedic astrology has some remedial measures to get relief and peace.  With this said, Vedic Astrology is useful for anyone at any age as a way to understand life and take actions toward a more peaceful and smooth path.

What would you need to set up your appointment?

An astrological chart is calculated by the person’s place of birth (City and country), date and time. An event for the person’s life is calculated with the present date and time. For partners and marriage, you will need this information for the both of you.

Spiritualizing Astrology

“The study of yoga and the vedas is not a religious work, it is a philosophy of life, it’s a discipline without dogma. Vedic astrology does not define, guide”.

Paramahansa Yogananada’s Teachings on Astrology:

“…you must always remember that God’s influence is the supreme influence.  You must commune with God so that all planetary forces will automatically harmonize with you.  That is the true meaning of spiritualizing astrology.

“Your karma (past actions) was once governed by your will power.  Its lawful effects seem irrevocable.  But the effects of past actions can be changed by seeking God.  Unless you remember that, you can’t spiritualize astrology.  God is Joy.  If you can hold your happiness during all the events in your life, then you are above the influence of the stars.  If you can retain your smile in spite of everything, that is awakening the consciousness of Divinity within you.  Immediately the stars will smile with you.  They can’t shed their evil rays on you.  This is spiritual astrology.”  from SRF magazine

God Talks With Arjuna: The Bhagavad Gita, Chapter III, Verse 11

“The astrological stars of a person are nothing but an environment that he himself has chosen by the karmic pattern he has fashioned by his past-life actions.  According to this karmic pattern he is attracted to be reborn on Earth at a given time that is favorable to the fulfillment of that pattern.  In that sense, astrology is only a very poor way of finding out what one’s past karma is.  It is at best an unsure art when practiced by those who lack divine intuitive perception.”
