What exactly is a Japa Mala?
A Japa Mala Beads, or Mala like is commonly known in the Western culture, is a string or prayer beads commonly used in Indian religion as a functional garlands of meaningful and mindful 108 counted beads, 1 guru bead and a tassel used for meditation. They are often kept sacred and close; can be carried in a special pouch or worn as jewelry, typically as a necklace or a wrap bracelet.
The use of a mala helps you stay focus during your meditation practice, the beads are put together using a thread and leaving a knot between each one of them that represents the obstacles that arise on different aspects of our lives.
A “Guru” (Sanskrist term for “Piece of Mountain”) is used to close the Mala, indicated the beginning and end of each cycle of life, and it is said it receives the intention of meditation.
The tassels that is attached to the “Guru” represents the lotus flower. Meditating on each bead with an affirmation or a mantra brings focus and peace to whoever uses it.
The word “Mala” is a Sanskrit term that means “Garland”
